In June, we asked visitors to the Imagine Fort Mill website: What types of commercial establishments do you typically LEAVE Fort Mill in order to patronize?
This concept is generally referred to as "retail leakage." Retail leakage occurs when local residents leave a community to spend their disposable income at businesses in other locations. Many Fort Mill residents travel to neighboring communities, such as Charlotte, Pineville, Rock Hill and Indian Land, to patronize businesses that are not available in the Fort Mill area. The purpose of this question was to identify opportunities for future commercial growth in the Fort Mill area in an effort to diversify our tax base, promote job growth and keep more local dollars here in Fort Mill.
We received a total of 122 responses over the course of the month. Of these, a total of 68.0% said they typically left the Fort Mill area to shop at Clothing & Accessory Stores. Approximately half of all respondents leave Fort Mill to patronize Restaurants & Bars (56.6%), Home Furniture & Decor Stores (56.6%) and Cultural & Entertainment Venues (49.2%). A full summary of responses can be found in the graphic below.
